 NZXT Phantom

Elder-Geek: 5/5

The NZXT Phantom can be found from $120 to $140 USD which sounds a bit on the pricey side for a case. However, the NZXT Phantom is a very feature-full case. The completely tool-less design, the top notch cable management system, the fan speed control, the number of effective case fans that come stock, the killer look, and overall smart design make the Phantom an excellent case worth your consideration for your next build. In fact, we liked it so much, that we’re awarding it with Elder-Geek.com’s very first Elder’s Choice Award.

The Phantom is a case that I could look at all day long and not get bored with the styling and though the majority of it uses plastic, it doesn't have the same cheap feel that other similar cases have. The chassis doesn't have a tacky feel to it and I think a lot of that comes down to the way the metal and plastic meet together seamlessly.

Feature wise it belongs in the no frills zone and simply works. It doesn't have any complicated mechanical features that no one wants or needs and simply does what it says on the tin in terms of installation and operational purposes.

First impressions of any chassis tend to stick with you despite what you discover after opening the box.  When we first saw this case we were very impressed with the artful styling and creative use of angles.  It wasn't until we saw the case first hand that we realized that beneath all of those angles is some very creative cooling options.  While we would have liked to see more done with the internals and maybe some pressure connectors for the door fans we still like the design.  If you are looking for a case that you can mod you may want to pass on the NZXT Phantom as it is clearly designed for aircooling applications, which is not always a bad thing.

We really can’t complain with the Phantom. It features killer styling and ample room for even the most space-demanding builds. We only wish it were a bit more efficient at whisking away heat with the included fans and provided more space for custom water cooling loops — something any full tower should easily excel at.

"Luego de horas revisando y analizando el producto, nos costo bastante encontrarle defectos, todos los aspectos están muy bien cubiertos. Se le pueden agregar y mejorar algunas cosas, como a todo, pero son detalles basados en gustos de cada uno. En cuanto al precio, es ligeramente superior a otros modelos de la misma gama, pero posee varias características que otros fabricantes no tienen en cuenta. En resumen, sale un poco más, pero nos brinda más utilidades."

"Overall, NZXT has a winner with the Phantom as it has everything we expect from a top quality case and more. The Phantom has definitely made an impression on us and we would gladly recommend this case to anyone. With an MSRP of $139.99, the Phantom is at the top of the cases in that price range. The NZXT Phantom receives our TechREACTION.net Gold Silicon Award!"

"NZXT has placed a new standard on cases that fall into the mid-range price market. Over the last month or so we have seen the Phantom priced anywhere from $99 to $139. At the price it is hard for other cases to match what the Phantom offers. It all starts with the quality of the case. It is well built and about as sturdy as you can get. The styling is one that we can not deny here, and that front bezel is different from anything else on the market. In a time where everyone is going toward heavily mesh fronts, NZXT combined it with a front door panel that flow very well together."

"Starting with the Phantom chassis, NZXT got a lot of things right with this one. I really like the toolless drive rails, multiple cooling options, integrated fan controller, fully painted chassis and especially the attention to detail in terms of cable management. There's plenty of room inside for most hardware configurations, including up to seven hard drives / SSDs. Water cooling users will appreciate the removable hard drive cage and multiple tubing holes at the rear of the case."

“The NZXT Phantom did everything that is was designed to do very well, but I definitely would not recommend this case to everyone.  If you are just looking for something to throw some parts into, then you should probably look at something a bit cheaper.  If on the other hand you want to build something that will look and perform well, then the Phantom might be for you.   In addition to all of the performance/installation convenience that the rest of the article covered, I think the case itself is simply beautiful.  The sleek shape and finish on the Phantom looks great.  The Phantom also doesn't have a huge clear window into the computer which a lot of higher end cases seem to sport.  Personally, I find those windows to be unattractive so the lack of one on the Phantom is a big plus for me.  When compared to other cases in a similar price range, NZXT's Phantom would certainly be one of my top choices.”

"A unique and well thought out design, great mix of interesting features and a healthy dose of functionality make this chassis nearly perfect. And with the long list of features it does not break the bank, costing just 140 Euros. While this is by no means a budget chassis, the price / price performance is excellent.

The power supply shines with very low operating noise, 80Plus Gold certification, modular, uniquely shaped cables and a white in white look. Overall the NZXT Phantom can be called the best chassis the company has ever presented, while the Hale90 is an excellent power supply if it keeps what it promises on the box, all in all very impressive NZXT!"

“Almost everything about this case seems to have considerable thought put into it. From the rubber grommets on the motherboard tray, to the noise dampening standoffs of the PSU we were impressed. NZXT also included 5 color-matched extension cables for those users that have shorter PSU cables and want to utilize the cable management feature. At $140 USD this case is priced significantly higher than we normally would expect to pay for a case, but with all the added features we have no problem giving this case a solid recommendation.”

“NZXT has really hit the mark with the Phantom. There has been a lot of hype surrounding NZXT and this new release, and that hype is not in vain. The Phantom is indeed something to be excited for, as it feels the needs for virtually any enthusiast; the sheer size, the smooth contours, and glossy finish are the initial attractions, and it goes even deeper than that – excellent cooling performance, clean cable management, and an easy installation seal the deal.  I would say NZXT’s new Phantom is designed ground for any enthusiast needing a high performance chassis for their superior gaming rig.”

"NZXT has really gone all out with the Phantom case.  PCWizKid tried hard to find flaws and issues but just couldnt.  The amount of features and support are extensive and truely aim at the enthusiast level gamer looking to customize a rig with cool looks.  The only thing mising was a front intake fan which is common in cases of this caliber, however this has plenty of side panel cooling to make up for that. As a result of the many positive aspects of this case (mentioned in the video review) PCWizKid gives this a "Editor's Choice" award for best in its class."

“NZXT has once again raised the bar for PC cases in both form and function. With sports car looks and well thought out design, the Phantom is one of the best cases that I have come across. NZXT built the Phantom for functionality providing plenty of room for expansion, incorporate several fans including the monstrous 200 mm beast on the top of the case and provides plenty of ventilation openings on all sides of the Phantom.  The interior provides plenty of room for your PC installation with additional space for expansion. The Phantom is designed for the PC enthusiast and is a case that you'll want to proudly display as your technologic focal point.”

There was almost nothing negative to say about this product, mind you it is my job to look at these products critically. Installation was smooth, especially with screwless 5.25″ bays and thumbscrews in the expansion slots. “The NZXT Phantom is a breath of fresh air in terms of colour scheme, features and performance. It coped well with our hardware and would make a great case for an overclocked high-end system. Having five independent, variable fan speed controllers is a real boon too, especially as they're within easy reach on top of the case for fine tuning. It's an easy case in which to install hardware with plenty of tool-free fittings and general space to work with. “NZXT has focused their entire business strategy on building products specifically geared toward the wants and desires of gamers. I think they made some good strides toward meeting the goals of this strategy with the Phantom case. The air cooling options are stellar, and serious overclockers using water or phase-change cooling for their expensive hardware  will enjoy having multiple cooling avenues to choose from. The included water relay line holes on the back panel of the case was also a great addition for external watercooling solutions.

The overall design and construction of the Phantom is downright gorgeous and included numerous aircooling options that will be more than enough for most enthusiasts and gamers. The tool-less hard drive cages and optical bays made installation quick and painless too. Cable management was also a huge plus with this case as their was ample room to hide data and power cables behind the motherboard. I'm sure NZXT will get a warm reception from enthusiasts on the Phantom and we have high expectations for the company as they become a larger competitor in the PC case industry.”

“NZXT Phantom is unquestionably worth considering when it becomes available in early September—especailly if you're in need of a spacious case for your next gaming PC. Our practice build in this case was very satisfying—it's rare that we don't find ourselves frustrated, even just a little, by cramped conditions, but we didn't once here. If that's the kind of thing that bugs you as much as it bugs us, you'll find the Phantom a lot better idea than putting a Death Star shield generator on the forest moon of Endor.”

“I must say that the NZXT Phantom is superior in quality and offers many great features. The amount of space on the interior is astronomical and will surely be a great choice for many computer users today, as well as for long periods of time in the future. NZXT has brought a lot of features to the table with the Phantom that are new to me and surely new to many others. The integrated fan controller is probably my favorite, though not completely necessary for the fans packaged with the Phantom as they already are silent at full speed. However 20W per channel can supply enough power to any high speed fan on the market. The case is almost 100% toolless (aside from installing the motherboard itself) and can speed up installations greatly. The mesh panels are also a great addition as they look great while acting as a subtle way to improve airflow throughout the entire case. Even a dual radiator can be installed next to the motherboard on the inside of the case on top of where the wire management slots are located.  I can definitely make the statement that the NZXT is a great computer case and I doubt I'll be letting it go for a while. The wire management is great, there is loads of space inside the case, it can house a massive amount of fans, large ones at that, and looks great. For a computer enthusiast in the market for an upper end, full tower, great looking case, the NZXT is far from being shy of a poor choice.”

“Overall we would say the NZXT Phantom chassis is aimed towards computer enthusiasts and gamers who are looking for an excellent chassis for today and will be future proof for a while to come.  The black interior is well done and the vented side panel where an optional 230mm intake fan to cool those heat producing video cards cannot go unnoticed.  The aesthetics are beautiful.  The features are well executed and you will be getting the build quality of NZXT, with the latest and greatest features all wrapped up in a very reasonable price.

We are told that the NZXT Phantom will be available with at the price of $139 USD.  We believe this is a more than reasonable price in a tough competitive market filled with literally hundreds of competitors available in this price range.

So, Johnny Hou, we believe you have fulfilled your promise to us, the consumers.  Well done NZXT, well done.”

What more could ask for? With all of these features, and the fact that I’m stumped to find a drawback. I’m Awarding this TechwareLabs Awesome Hardware Award!

After additional consideration we have decided the NZXT Phantom is worthy of our Editors Choice Award. This makes the Phantom one of a select handful of products we have ever received to be awarded both the Awesome Hardware and the Editors Choice. Congratulations NZXT!”

This case absolutely blows my mind, the airflow out of the box is incredible, there is almost too much space, and the design is breathtaking :)

It?s a big tower but not regarding heigth. The chassis is deep and you can buid in everything. The fans are so silent, I never can remember similar towers. It?s the best model in time I think and it?s worth every Penny!!
