this will be an ongoing mod timeline as things progress from design to build etc.
*** it would be a massive help if anyone had front, side, back, top, inside flat on shots of the Rogue so i can design right onto the pictures (must be flat on, perspective is too hard to work with)***

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k168/pnub_2006/roguefrontpanel1.jpg

first up because thats what i had an image of to work with so far. 2x120mm front fans to be hidden behind the door and push air over the harddrives which will be behind them. horizontal to the motherboard there is the perfect spot for 4 drives behind the right hand side front fan.

step 2

-nice big mesh front panel most likely just bolted on tight through the fans with a bit of rubber molding around for looks. possibly need to add epoxy around the hole for the mesh to stay really secure but with the rubber molding vibration wont be any issue.

-still undecided about power and reset whether i want illuminated ring and wire it into the existing LED's or without.

-want to keep door unchanged for looks on the front and dont want to go down to 80mm fans... because i said so!

still looking for front beneath this panel and front of this panel, top down onto motherboard without the 5.25" bays pictures for rest of the mod design before sending a direct e-mail to NZXT for line drawings which they probably wont give me.

Harddrive placement for the 2 or 4 rack (depends on vertical space but i should get a 4 rack in there easily)

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k168/pnub_2006/Airflow.jpg

most importantly airflow diagram (minus calculations of CFM per fan which comes later)
NB - North Bridge+Mosfets
SB - South Bridge
HDD - Hard Drives

sorry but it's the only picture i could find of it straight on with the door open. but thats what it should look like with the grill and fans in (grill will look much cleaner and not photoshop painted of course)
I'll have to tie the LED ring into the side LED's as they run off the power LED header already

it's not a tough mod yet (harddrives may pose an interesting amount of thinking to mount them but i'll think of something) probably going to put a mesh top window to vent a bit of the pressure within the case, rubber molding and bolted on similar to the front one

it'll be at least 3 months before i have the cash for the system but the case design will keep growing during that and as new hardware comes out things will change but not change much

possibly (HOPEFULLY) the radeon 5000 series?? im excitedddd

Roadie
08-30-2009, 10:11 PM
oh i didnt even post what was going in it!

EVGA X58 SLI Micro
I7 920
8x cooler master R4 L2R 90cfm
Corsair H50 liquid cooler
Ultra LS600 watt PSU (swap out the fan for one of the CM's)
EVGA GTS 250 (or 300 series when it comes out)
OCZ Gold Tri Channel 6GB @ 1600mhz
WD 500GB 7200rpm HDD
sound foam for sides and top around the fans (softens noise AND custom cut under the screws to reduce vibration)

later additions:
SSD boot drive
second GTS250 or higher graphics card

i highly reccomend getting an SSD. i use one and my windows 7 boot time is 12 seconds. its amazing. Possibly the best money ive ever spent...

Roadie
08-30-2009, 10:20 PM
i'm just biding my time until they perfect that "SSD cleaner" that potentially gives it a much longer MTBF lifespan
been looking into the corsair 32gb that reads at like 250mb per second and writes 170mb
which would be insane in a lan box. or the other thought is save up a bit more and go with a 64 and toss all my programs onto it so everything is lightning fast just store files on the 500gb and add another in raid0

do you think it would be hard to add hot swap drives into this build? since the HDD racks wouldnt be on the sides i think it might be possible to have top loading hot swap in there...

mostwantedbmw
08-30-2009, 10:26 PM
if it were me, i would drill tiny holes in the top for 2 SSDs and a set in the bottom for a HDD, but thats me. i would eliminate bays altogether, because SSDs make no noise, vibrations, or heat.

Roadie
08-30-2009, 10:30 PM
yeah thats basically what i'm doing for the HDD's, small brackets are gonne be under the 5.25" bays just L brackets for 2 HDD's behind the fans then SSD's could still go in the existing racks or... dunno where else to put them really because i want about 1/2-3/4" under and over the HDD's behind the fans which doesnt leave much room for anything else in that area

mostwantedbmw
08-31-2009, 07:18 AM
OR, you can get two of those corsairs in raid 0, and have a 1tb WD for storage... Just sayin :P
Some places on the web say its not much of a performance gain, but theyre wrong. it doubles the speed, Even on an SSD. i got my SSD hella cheap. 139.99 + free shipping. and thats 64 gigs... O.o

Roadie
08-31-2009, 11:54 AM
i've wanted to run a test on if you just have the OS on the SSD and all the programs on a 1TB will the programs still be as fast because the OS is searching at higher read speeds or does the HDD slow the programs down?

ivybat
08-31-2009, 04:59 PM
It depends on the program, generally it depends on your RAM.

Where the HDD really matters in application use is generally opening and closing the application, because that's all disk usage. Other things, like what you're typing in your word document, are kept in memory which doesn't use the HDD

Roadie
08-31-2009, 07:31 PM
yeah i was talking open/close times
the ram i'm getting is clocked around 1600mhz and 6gig worth so it's more than enough

mostwantedbmw
08-31-2009, 07:46 PM
okay so i'm assuming DDR3, so either a phenom II or an i7.
Either way, an SSD paired with that RAM is Awesome. ive got 1066 clocked to 1200 running with my SSD and it screams. 12 second startup, 7 second shutdown.
So yeah.

Roadie
08-31-2009, 10:44 PM
yep DDR3 with an i7 920 clocked(hopefully) at around 3.6-4.2 ghz if the cooling and chip allows
i know the cooling should allow it to get close to 3.8 or 4.0 based on benched reviews of the corsair h50 and with the amount of airflow within the case northbridge and mosfets should be pretty chilly compared to some of the air cooled systems in a mid tower or larger

I love the 920. With stock heat sink with GelID I am OC'd to 3.6ghz with stable burn in's using my Zero and in the tempest with this liquid cooling set up I hit 4.8ghz no problem:

Swiftech Apogee GTZ
GelID Extreme
Black Ice XtremeII Radiator
1/2in Tubing

I'd be happy to hit 4.0 stable at around 50-60C full load (i want it to last for quite a while so i don't need to re-buy for at least a couple years)

The Tempest on full load for 10 minutes is around 72C running 4.8ghz with pump at half speed. You should have no problem. You got the D0 stepping 920 right?

Roadie

havent bought the parts yet, just in the design phase. i'll be buying the parts in about 2-3 months when prices for the i7 drops when the i5's and Nvidia's 300 series get released

they're still about 309$ in canada
whole system minus the case is about $1412 from tiger direct including 19"monitor, and EVGA 250
the case is only $179 which is nice and cheap for an nzxt case up here

you're lucky things are crazy cheap in the states!
just looking through the list it would be at least $2000 for all of that

I was looking into a more custom liquid cooling system with 314gph pump, 1/2"id tubing and a pair of 2x120mm rad's but it's only for the CPU which i wont be pushing very hard but still want the near silence of a rad/pump set-up

if i add an SSD it'll be about 130 more
and a 4890 would be total overkill for a 1366x768 monitor that i'll get (plus a second after the next pay cheque) I should be getting average FR's around 60-70 in most games even full detail and 4x AA

Stay away from the Corsair SSD. They're still using Samsung NAND, currently the worst on the market. No ability to upgrade firmware either. Stick to OCZor Intel.

Anyway, to answer your previous question, an application installed on a conventional HDD will open just as slowly as before you had the OS on the SSD

Roadie
09-01-2009, 01:27 PM
that intel x25 is looking promising but i want to hold off on the ssd to be the one of if not the last thing i buy for the system just to give manufacturers the most time to release something really good to drop prices of whats out now.

stay away from the intel ones their wear leveling is pretty bad, so they lose a lot of performance quick.

i have the ocz agility, it's amazing. (my sig is out of date)

mostwantedbmw

yeah agreed. the Agility would have been my second choice. update yer sig dude :P

lets see if the new siggy is up and running...

design update will be soon on top panel mesh window, still deciding between hex mesh or tighter less see through stuff

mesh window to be attached to the top panel. and assist venting of all that air being pushed into the case :D

still need to decide whether to put a fan controller in or run the fans direct from the PSU,
anyone know how loud 7 cooler master R4 - 90cfm fans will be? the specs (which are wrong) say the fans are 19dB each, but i know it's 23dB at 2000rpm which is what they would be running direct from the PSU.

if i'm to believe that and the law of sound it would be 23dB+3dB x 6more fans = 41dB total... don't want to deal with that kind of sound level, i'm going for around < 30dB.

I can't run them off the motherboard because they are 4.2watts each and each header only supports 1amp (10-12 watts max) so 6 fans on 2 spare headers doesnt work.
i dont mind using a fan controller but preferably having all 6 fans run on automatic thermal control would be best so i never need to work about overheating things. (looking at the zalman 6ch controller because i need 6 channels or minimum 3, each able to run 8.4watts from automated thermal control)

Roadie

well here's a kick in my gears... decided to see how much room i had on my desk for the computer...
realized i dont have the space for a pair of 19" monitors plus the rogue so this is now turned into an NZXT Beta EVO due to it's width being about the maximum space i can spare on the desk without buying a new one. top connectors may be a problem but i dont know yet.
if i do go with the Beta EVO theres no modding i'll have to do on it which will make the build that much faster, cheaper and physically smaller.

I wish i was this creative... :( . Although I don't have the time to do stuff like this.

Roadie
09-15-2009, 06:54 PM
with a dremel and some C channel molding it's probably about 2 hours. front hole takes no effort at all, mesh is just screwed in place with the fan screws. harddrive caddy would be the most difficult but i think if i ever get to do this design i'll use mechano or simple steel L brackets to mount the drives.

but i need a new desk first. so this is a Cooler Master Sileo 500 build now! no mod's, maybe cutting a bit of the inside mesh out to increase airflow from the front intake and thats it.

ooo nice. I just have seperate hard drives for stuff like that lol.

HDD 1 = OS/Gaming (250GB)
HDD 2 = Photoshop/any other picture editing (250GB)
HDD 3 = Sony Vegas / After Effects (250GB)
HDD 4 = The Uncompressed Media From Above (1TB)

cool
i have my external 500gb for movies and tv shows that wont fit on my laptop but after the build is done i'll invest in some 1TB or 1.5TB externals
