can someone please advise? thanks.

You can put them wherever you want. The best idea is to tape one to your CPU heatsink, another to your harddrive, and leave one hanging in your case for an ambient temperature

ok. but what are the normal temperatures for the harddisk, CPU n grahpic card?

The thermal probes will not provide a very accurate reading for these things, the best way to monitor them is with programs like CoreTemp, Everest, RealTemp, ATITool, CPU-z HW Monitor etc.

All CPUs have temperature diodes built into the chip, so do the GPUs. Most HDDs, all of the ones equipped with SMART, have temperature sensors too.

CPUs as a general rule should be under 50C at full load
GPUs as a general rule should be under 90C at full load
HDDs as a general rule should always be in the high 30sC, or very low 40sC

You should measure your CPU, Chipset, Hard disk and GPU/GPUVRM temperatures internally. I use Everest for almost all this, GPU-Z for graphics specifics.
The thermal probes are best used to measure the ambient case temperature, southbridge or RAM temperature, as those components aren't monitored.

I also use a Lexa Blackline as a server, for which I solely monitor the HDD temps.

If you don't want to shell out the dough for Everest, also see the CPUID HWMonitor:

Need some help,

I was trying to install a hard drive, and somewhere along the way, the cables for the temparture sensors got taken off wherever they were before.

I read this topic, so I'll be able to put them back.

Problem now is, that the display doesn't even light up - any ideas??

Also, the fan on the back isn't working at all.

I have ASUS P5Q3 board, with a 750 watt corsair powersupply.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Chris

Both the case fans and temperature sensors require Molex power connectors to the power supply (the big blocks with four large pins), check if these two are still properly connected.
